First day of class: 妻友社区 students start fall semester

It鈥檚 the first day of fall classes at 妻友社区 (GGC) as thousands of students make their way across campus.

鈥淚鈥檓 thrilled to see our campus vibrant with the return of our faculty, staff and students,鈥 said GGC President Jann L. Joseph.

Along with finding their classes, students are exploring the campus, discovering where to purchase books, grab a snack and catch up with their friends.

For first-year students Camila Pineda and Jocelyn Tobar, the day started and ended before noon.

鈥淲e only had two classes today,鈥 said Pineda, who plans to study psychology. 鈥淚 really like that there are so many extracurricular activities on campus.鈥

鈥淚 had heard a lot of good things about GGC, and so far, my professors seem nice,鈥 said Tobar, who hasn鈥檛 decided on her major, yet.

For juniors Jesse Tankou and Nathan Tankou, getting to campus before their classes meant extra time to meet up with their friends and do a little gaming on the second floor of the Student Center, in an open area with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the campus.

鈥淚 like that GGC is close by,鈥 said Jesse Tankou, who is studying information technology. 鈥淪o far, my experience here has been good.鈥

His brother, Nathan Tankou, is studying criminal justice / criminology and taking advantage of his musical side.

鈥淚 play a lot of instruments,鈥 he said, adding that he also performs with GGC鈥檚 student ensembles. 鈥淏ut right now, it鈥檚 the saxophone.鈥

Along with students, Dr. Chavonda Mills, interim senior vice president of Academic and Student Affairs and provost, said that faculty are equally excited about the start of the semester.

鈥淥ur faculty are world-class professionals who bring their extensive knowledge to the classroom, sharing both the theory and practical application of expertise with their students,鈥 said Mills. 鈥淚鈥檓 proud that we have welcomed over 40 new faculty members who bring a wealth of experience to the benefit of our students.鈥
