With safety top of mind, �������� (GGC) students returned to class today to begin the spring semester.

GGC President Jann L. Joseph said the college will continue with the hybrid model through which students attend class in person and online on designated days. This social-distancing model was implemented during the fall 2020 semester. Joseph also reminded the campus community of GGC’s continued COVID-19 prevention measures.

“While we are eager to return to ‘normal,’ the pandemic persists,” wrote Joseph in an email sent to students this morning. “We must continue to practice the safety measures put in place to decrease the transmission of COVID-19.”

Cinema and media arts production major Patrick Cheek, 25, of Snellville, said that he’s excited to come back to campus because it allows him to meet and interact with fellow students. While the pandemic is still a factor in his education, the senior said he’s looking toward the future.

“I’m staying motivated and working hard so that when the pandemic is over, I can say that I used the time wisely,” he said.

Harriett Amofah

This will be the final semester at GGC for senior Harriet Amofah, 25, of Lithia Springs. Amofah, who serves as president of GGC’s Student Government Association (SGA), is on track to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in human development and aging services. She said while it was challenging to navigate from an in-person to an online environment, her instructors, family and friends helped her persevere.

After she graduates, Amofah plans to pursue a master’s degree in nursing, but meanwhile, she remains enthusiastic about the next few months at school. She also has some advice for her follow students, some of whom might be nervous as they begin their last semester.

“It is okay to be scared, but make sure your fear does not control what you make of your semester in college and future,” she said. “Seek support when needed. Utilize campus resources and reach out to your professors for assistance.  Lastly, do not ever give up. Nothing is unattainable.”
